Saints defeat Kaiserhoff 2-1 in 12-inning marathon

Fans watching the Saints game against the New Ulm Kaiserhoff Sunday in Dassel were treated to a 12-inning pitcher’s battle that ended with Dassel-Cokato winning 2-1 on a final unearned run.

A total of 16 Saints players saw time in the non-league game, and manager Mark Forsman used it as an opportunity to give some of his players off the bench an opportunity to start and show what they can do.

Jordan Flick was one of those young guns, and strutted his stuff out on the mound for DC. He started the game and went six-and-one-third innings. During that time he gave up six hits, but didn’t walk a single batter. The Kaiserhoff scored their only run of the game off him in the third inning with a single and a two-out double.

Andrew Carlson relieved Flick in the seventh and went the rest of the way, allowing just two hits in 5.2 shutout innings.

As good as the DC pitching was, New Ulm wasn’t shabby either. The Kaiserhoff held the Saints scoreless for the first seven innings, but lost their lead in the eighth when Luke Peterson led off with a walk. Brent Opsahl bunted him into scoring position, and Dan Birkholz delivered an RBI single to tie the game.

The score stayed locked at one until the bottom of the 12th inning. With one out on the board, Cole Flick reached second base on a New Ulm error, and Matt Bergstrom singled him in for the winning run.

DC holds on for 11-7 win over St. Michael

The DC Saints’ offense was just a little more potent than the St. Michael Saints’ offense Sunday when the two teams met in Dassel for a North Star League game.

DC’s batters crushed out 13 hits and won 11-7, while St. Michael had just six hits, but managed to pile them up in one inning for a majority of their runs.

Dan Birkholz started the game on the mound for DC, but had a few kinks to work out in the first inning. He walked three, hit one batter, and gave up a hit to let St. Michael jump out to 2-0 lead.

That lead was quickly erased, however, as DC scored some early runs of its own. They got one in the first thanks to Matt Bergstrom’s lead-off double, and two in the second with singles from Eric Hanson and Brendon Opsahl.

After reclaiming the lead, Birkholz had no problems getting through the second, third, and fourth innings. In the fifth inning, however, St. Michael opened up a considerable lead. They pounded out two hits against Birkholz, and also had three runners hit by a pitch.

Tyler Zweibohmer came in to finish the inning, but not before giving up a double and another single. The total damage in the inning was five runs, and St. Michael now held a 7-3 lead.

Fortunately, DC’s bats were their to pick up their pitcher. DC got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth off singles from Andrew Carlson and Hanson.

In the bottom of the seventh, DC took the lead for the last time with a five-run rally of its own. Luke Peterson, Hanson, and Brendon Opsahl all singled, and Brent Opsahl doubled to make it a 10-7 game.

A single by Brent Opsahl, followed by Birkholz’s double put the icing on the cake.

While DC’s offense was mounting a comeback, Zweibohmer was masterful in the final four innings, not allowing a hit the rest of the game.

Saints shutout Orphans

There was just one run scored June 11 during the Saints’ NSL game against Howard Lake, in Dassel, and fortunately it was DC that got it for a 1-0 victory.

The Saints scored that run in the first inning. Matt Bergstrom walked with one out, and Brent Opsahl and Dan Birkholz hit back-to-back singles with two outs to bring in the winning run.

After that run, both teams’ pitching staffs put on an impressive display. DC’s Eric Hanson started and went eight innings, giving up five hits and stranding three. He also struck out seven and got the Lakers to roll over into three inning-ending double plays.

Kyle Kaczmarek closed out the eighth for DC. He had everyone holding their breath as he walked two batters, but held on for the save.

Howard Lake’s starting pitcher, Shane Kahn, allowed just three more hits after the first inning, and threw eight complete. He walked a few more batters than Hanson, but also stranded nine.

Andrew Ghostley threw the last inning for the Orphans and gave up one hit.

Birkholz led the offense with two hits and the only RBI. Bergstrom also had two hits and the only run scored.

Saints strand 13 runners in 8-5 loss to Delano

The Saints had their opportunities to score Wednesday when they travelled to Delano for a Section 8B, North Star League game against Delano, but 13 runners stranded on base paved the way for an 8-5 loss.

Delano got all the runs they needed in their big fourth-inning rally. Up until that point, Dassel-Cokato starter Jordan Danielson was throwing a no-hitter. From the start of that four inning, though, everything fell apart.

A lead-off double by Josh Muckenhirn, followed by Mark Petersen’s single, started things. Danielson was able to get the next two batters out, but then the flood gates opened. Delano ripped four more singles, and Danielson issued two walks before Jordan Flick came in to finish the inning. The total damage was six runs, and DC would never fully recover.

They scored one in the fifth without the benefit of a hit, and four in the sixth to close within one run. That sixth inning saw Andrew Carlson single, and Dan Birkholz double. Otherwise the rest of DC’s offense was courtesy of three walks and two hit batters.

That would be the end of the Saints’ scoring, though, and Delano added one more run in the bottom of the sixth, and the eighth to solidify their lead.

Saints walk to 10-5 victory over Clear Lake

The Saints only had eight hits in their home game June 4 against Clear Lake, but they didn’t even need that many to win 10-5.
The Clear Lake pitchers were feeling extra generous that day, walking 15 DC batters and hitting three with a pitch for a total of 18 free base runners.
The Saints scored runs five differently innings, but the big ones were their book-end, three-run innings in the first and eighth.
DC scored three in the first with the three walks and a hit batter. Matt Bergstrom’s double was the only hit of the inning.
John Hohenstein doubled to lead off the second inning, and DC scored two more runs with another walk and a hit batter.
While the Saints jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, DC starter Eric Hanson kept Clear lake off the board.
He cruised through the first two innings without much hassle, but got in a little trouble in the third when a walk and two singles loaded the bases with one out. Hanson got tough, though and struck out the next two batters to strand the runners.
Hanson gave up one run in the fifth inning, his final of the game, and ended up getting the win for DC.
The Saints put runs in the sixth and seventh innings with just two singles total. Clear Lake, meanwhile, managed to score two runs in the seventh, making it a 7-3 game after seven innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, DC scored three more runs off singles from Karsen Forsman, Brent Opsahl, and Brendon Opsahl. An interesting side note is that Forsman was born just before a Clear Lake game, and now had his first amateur baseball hit against the same team.
Clear Lake scored two in the top of the ninth inning, but it was much too little, much too late.
Jordan Danielson and Matt Bergstrom both had two RBI for the Saints, and Zach Lingl tied a DC record with four walks in one game.

Saints beat up on Sartell 8-2 in a non-league game

The Saints had little trouble defeating Sartell in a non-league game Wednesday in Dassel.

Though they only scored two runs in the first five innings, the bats came around in the sixth and DC put up six runs in the final three innings to cruise to an 8-2 victory.

Jordan Danielson started on the mound for the Saints, and although Sartell got to him for 10 hits in his five-and-two-thirds innings of work, he allowed just two runs, and only one was earned. Nine Sartell runners were stranded on base during that time, too.

After Danielson left the game with two outs in the sixth, Tyler Zweibohmer took over and was lights out in the seventh and eighth innings, not allowing another hit. Kyle Kaczmarek came in for the ninth and closed things up with another hitless inning.

DC got the board early with two runs in the first inning off singles from Justin McKinley, Matt Bergstrom and Brent Opsahl. They went scoreless for the next four innings, though, allowing Sartell to tie the game in the top of the sixth.

In the bottom half of that inning, though, DC scrapped out two runs on a Sartell error and singles from Dan Birkholz and Brendon Opsahl.

The Saints added to their lead with another run in the seventh off a single from John Hohenstein, who stole second and third base to be knocked in by McKinley’s sacrifice fly.

The eighth inning was the final nail in Sartell’s coffin. DC batted in three more runs off singles from Birkholz, Jordan Flick and Hohenstein, and a double from Eric Hanson.

Hohenstein had two hits and two RBI in the game to lead the offense. Brendon Opsahl also had two RBI, and Birkholz had two hits.

Saints beat Springers 5-4 in ninth inning

It took seven innings for the Saints to get their bats going, but once they finally did they were able to score enough runs to beat the Cold Spring Springers 5-4.

Cold Spring starter Rick Burtzel flustered the DC hitters, allowing just one run in six scoreless innings.

During that time, the Springers built a 4-0 lead against Saints starter Dan Birkholz. They scrounged together enough hits to go with a couple of Saints errors, walks and hit batters to score runs in the second, fourth, and fifth innings.

After Burtzel left, though, the Saints’ bats came to life in the eighth inning. Matt Bergstrom, Luke Peterson, and Brent Opsahl all singled with one out to load the bases, but Birkholz hit a grounder back to first that was thrown home for the second out. Fortunately, Eric Hanson came up with the big double to score all three runners before being thrown out at third.

That made it a 4-3 game, but DC completed the comeback in grand fashion in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Drew Gorenson walked with one out to get on base, and Cole Flick singled to put the winning run on first. The Springers got the second out on an infield fly ball, put Bergstrom ripped a walk-off double with two outs to score both runs.

Bergstrom finished the game with three hits, including two doubles, and two RBI.

Saints beat powerhouse Miesville 5-4

A little clutch hitting helped the Dassel-Cokato Saints take down the Mudhens of Miesville 5-4 Saturday in Dassel during a non-league game. The Saints had 10 hits in all, but the biggest ones came in the first, third and fourth innings with runners on base.

DC opened things up early with three runs in the first inning. A lead-off walk and Miesville error put Zach Lingl and Matt Bergstrom on base right away, and Dan Birkholz had the first single for an RBI.

Birkholz ended up being doubled-off on Brent Opsahl’s line drive caught by the first baseman, but Cole Flick clutched up with a two-out double to score the second run. Ross Bergstrom also had a two-out single to score the third run of the inning.

Opsahl and Flick got it going again in the third inning with lead-off singles, and Opsahl eventually scored on another Miesville error.

Finally, Brice Berggren started the fourth inning with a walk, and came around to score of Matt Bergstrom’s and Birkholz’s back-to-back singles with one out.

Even though DC was done scoring after the fourth inning, its pitching and defense was strong enough to hole that lead.

The Mudhens did get their licks in, too, though. They scored runs in the first and third innings on solo home runs off DC starter Eric Hanson, making it a 5-2 game after five innings.

Jordan Flick came in to pitch in the fifth, but after a quick 1-2-3 inning he stumbled a bit in the sixth by issuing two lead-off walks. Only one of those runners scored, though, as Flick toughened up a performed some damage control.

Flick made it through the seventh inning 1-2-3, and Andrew Carlson came in to finish the game. He made it through the eighth inning fine, but gave up a lead-off walk and two two-out singles to allow a run to score. On the play, though the runner on first tried to make it all the way over to third, but was thrown out to end Miesville’s threat, and the game.

Birkholz had two hits and two RBI to lead the offense. Matt Bergstrom, Cole Flick, and Ross Bergstrom also had two hits each.

Saints fall 10-3 to Section 8 rival Winsted

The Saints’ offense was practically nonexistent May 21 when they hosted the newest member of the Section 8 pool, the Winsted Wildcats, in Dassel.

Tony and Joe Kley were unhittable for Winsted, and held DC to just two hits the entire game, and only three runs. The Wildcat bats were just as effective as they got hits at all the right times to go on and win 10-3.

This loss means the Saints are 0-1 in section play.
DC did not have a hit in the game until John Hohenstein’s two-out double in the seventh inning. Eric Hanson also had a single to lead off the ninth inning, but other than those hits the only way the Saints had runners was by walking or being hit by the pitch.

The Kleys may have had 11 strikeouts, but for those who were patient enough, they may have been issued one of the 10 walks by Winsted.

Three walks, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly from Cole Flick are how the Saints scored their first two runs in the fourth inning. They scored one more in the ninth. After Hanson’s single, a couple walks and a Winsted error allowed him to score. It was far too little for the comeback, though.

The Wildcats put runs up on the board in five of the innings. Joe Kley opened it up with a lead-off home run in the second inning. He finished with three hits and four RBI. Gregg Kohler also had two hits and three RBI for Winsted, and Joe Kley had three hits and scored three runs. These three alone provided enough offense to beat the Saints.

Saints start season hot

The Saints are off to a 3-0 start this year, and 1-0 in the NSL.

There wasn’t much for Dassel-Cokato Saints head coach Mark Forsman to complain about after the boys handled Belle Plaine 9-2 late Friday night for their third win of the season.

The Saints (3-0, 1-0 North Star League) had everything going with the pitching, hitting, and defense all playing well to defeat a solid Tiger squad.

DC’s big win all started on the mound with their pitching. Dan Birkholz started and threw five innings. He allowed just one run on four hits and walked only two. Tyler Zweibohmer came on in the sixth and finished the game with one run allowed on three hits in four innings pitched. All together to the two Saints pitchers combined for nine strikeouts.

“Pitching was the key tonight,” Saints catcher Matt Bergstrom said. “The offense was good, but Dan threw well, and Tyler did really well.”

The defense complimented its pitchers. They did commit three errors, but two of them were in the ninth inning after the game was pretty in hand for DC. Bolstering the Saints offense were Lucas Peterson and Brendon Opsahl in the outfield, fresh back from college.

“It is nice to have those kids back,” Bergstrom said. “They can run in the outfield and play the game. It makes my job easier.”

“It was encouraging to have Dan go out there and throw well, and Zweibohmer throw well,” Forsman said. “We flashed a little leather, too, and we have some speed with the college kids back.”

On the offensive side of things, the Saints piled it on with 13 hits and nine RBI. DC put runs on the board in four consecutive innings, never giving the Tigers a chance to catch their breath.

“Tonight, we faced a quality pitcher . . . I think the guys were into the game, it was a nice night, and they were a good team,” Bergstrom said. “Once we put up a few runs, I think it put them (Belle Plaine) back on their heels a little bit, and we added from there.”

DC scored a run in the second on singles from Brendon Opsahl and Cole Flick, followed by the RBI double from John Hohenstein.

The third inning saw two more DC runs score on a pair of singles from Bergstrom and Flick, plus three walks issued by Belle Plaine.

The Saints took advantage of the Tigers’ only error by tacking on two singles off the bats of Bergstrom and Peterson for two more runs.

The final blow was in the fifth inning when DC really opened things up with four runs. Hohenstein, Zach Lingl and Brent Opsahl all singled, and Peterson and Birkholz had doubles to go along with one hit batter in the big inning.

“We hit the ball, which was good to see, and it was clutch hitting,” Forsman said. “Not just some scattered hits, but we got hits when we needed them.”

Bergstrom led the team with three hits and two runs scored. Peterson had two hits and two RBI, and Opsahl had two RBI on one hit. Flick and Hohenstein also had two hits each, and Lingl scored twice.

Saints beat Minnapolis in rain-shortened game
It was pouring rain Wednesday evening, but the Minneapolis Cubs had come all the way for a baseball game, so the Saints obliged them with a 9-2 pounding that was called after seven innings.

The weather wasn’t to bad when the game started at 7:30 p.m., but after a few innings of play the rain returned. Even though the umpire called the game after seven complete innings, the Saints may have ended it early anyway with the 10-run mercy rule, judging by the way things were going.

Some poor pitching by the Cubs, combined with excellent pitching from DC, considering the weather, led to the lopsided non-league victory.

Andrew Carlson and new Saints player Eric Brubaker combined to allow just five hits and no earned runs. They only walked three batters with the inclement weather, and struck out five. DC’s defense only committed two errors in the game, but both runners ended up scoring for the Cubs’ only runs.

On the offensive side, the Saints’ bats were looking good. DC ripped out eight hits in the short game, all singles. They also took full advantage of the five walks, six hit batters, and five wild pitches that the Cubs issued.

Zach Lingl and Dan Birkholz led the Saints at the plate with two hits and a RBI each.

Saints open with 7-4 win over league rival Rockford
The Dassel-Cokato Saints celebrated opening day with a home game against North Star League opponent Rockford, May 8 in Dassel. They fell into an early deficit after giving up three first-inning runs to the River Bandits, but DC pitchers sucked it up and allowed just one more run the rest of the game, allowing the Saints to come back and win 7-4.

It was a duel between both teams’ pitching staffs, and DC’s won by only allowing one earned run. Neither teams’ offense were particularly astonishing as both had five hits each.

Jordan Danielson was the starting hurler for DC, and struggled through the first inning. After getting the first batter out, he hit the second batter, gave up a single, then issued two walks and allowed another single. The seventh batter of the inning reached base safely on an error before the second and third outs were finally made.

Following the first inning, Danielson plowed through the River Bandits with a 1-2-3 inning in the second. He gave up a one-out single in the third, but a successful pick-off move kept it to just three Rockford batters that inning.

Tyler Zweibohmer came in for fourth inning and ruthlessly struck out the side. He then put Rockford down 1-2-3 in the fifth inning, and got out of the sixth easily thanks to catcher Matt Bergstrom’s throw to first that caught a Rockford runner off the base.

The River Bandits scored one more run in the seventh off a lead-off single and a DC error, but Birkholz came in for the eighth and ninth innings to close the door.

While the pitchers were turning the lights out on Rockford’s offense, the Saints batters were busy making up for an early hole.

After giving up three runs in the first, DC got two of those back in the bottom half. River Bandit starter Chris Main also had a rough first inning, issuing four walks, including two to lead-off batters Zach Lingl and Bergstrom. Birkholz singled to bring in one run, and the fourth walk issued to Eric Brubaker brought in the other.

The Chargers tied the game in the second after Drew Gorenson was hit by the pitch to start things off. He reached second on a passed ball, and stole third to get into position for Lingl’s RBI single.

The game stayed tied at three until the fifth inning when a hit batter, a Rockford error and a single from Gorenson made it 5-3. Main finished that inning, and ended his day with only three hits allowed. He also walked six and hit four, though, for a wild outing.

Rockford closed the gap to within one with the run in the seventh inning, but DC extended its lead with runs in the seventh and eighth, on a double from Brent Opsahl and a single from Bergstrom, to seal the win.

Nobody had a huge day for DC’s offense, but Lingl, Bergstrom, Birkholz, and Gorenson each had a hit and a RBI.
